Hyundai IONIQ 5 Kingston: Can You Charge a Used One?

A woman plugs a charging cord into the rear quarter of a white Hyundai IONIQ 5 parked on the shared parking apron behind a Kingston townhouse row at dusk, the cable running across the asphalt to an outdoor outlet box on the brick wall

A used Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a good buy in Kingston if you can plug in where you park overnight, and a frustrating one if you cannot.

That one question decides more than any number on any listing, and two more sit right behind it: what a Kingston February does to the range, and what happens to the battery warranty when the car changes hands.

This guide answers all three, and says plainly which ones we can check for you and which ones only the car's own paperwork can settle.

Jim Thompson Chrysler is a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram store on Gardiners Road, so a Hyundai is not one of our franchises, and that is exactly why the honest version of this advice is easy for us to write.

Key Takeaways

  • The IONIQ 5 and the Ioniq are two different vehicles. The IONIQ 5 is the tall, square, battery-only crossover; the Ioniq was a smaller hatchback sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric forms.

  • If you cannot charge where you park overnight, buy something else. Nothing else here changes that answer.

  • Wheel size alone moves the range: the Government of Canada Fuel Consumption Ratings rate the 2025 IONIQ 5 Long Range AWD at 463 kilometers on 19-inch wheels and 425 kilometers on 20-inch wheels, and a Kingston winter takes range out of both, which is why Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston tells you to check the wheels before you look at the price.

  • Coverage on the battery runs on the manufacturer's terms from the day the car first went into service, so ask the seller for the in-service date and the warranty booklet in writing.

  • Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston will go through a used IONIQ 5 with you and appraise what you are driving now, whatever badge is on it. See what your current vehicle is worth first, and financing is available through our online credit application, O.A.C.

Should You Buy a Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Kingston?

Yes, if you have a driveway or a garage with power and most of your driving happens inside Eastern Ontario. No, if you park on the street or in a lot with no outlet.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Kingston buyers we talk to are almost always shopping for their first electric car, and nobody has asked them that question yet.

Answer it honestly and the rest of the decision gets easy, because everything else about this car is either a small inconvenience or a pleasant surprise.

First, make sure you are looking at the right Hyundai

The IONIQ 5 and the Ioniq are not the same vehicle, and the two names sit close enough together that plenty of people find that out late.

The IONIQ 5 is the tall, square, battery-only crossover with the pixel-style lights, and it plugs in and only plugs in.

The Ioniq was a smaller, lower hatchback, sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions, which is where most of the confusion starts.

Search results still mix the two constantly, so read the listing slowly and confirm the model on the vehicle's own paperwork rather than on the advertisement.

The IONIQ 5 N is a version of the IONIQ 5 rather than a separate model, so a guide to the IONIQ 5 covers it too.

What Is a Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Kingston Actually Like to Live With?

It is quieter and roomier inside than anything its size has a right to be, and that is the part no feature list gets across.

There is no transmission tunnel down the middle of the floor, so whoever sits in the middle of the back seat has somewhere to put their feet.

On a dark drive home from Amherstview with the heat on, the quiet is what you notice. No engine, no gear changes, just tire noise and the radio.

The shape gets attention too, which surprises people who bought it for sensible reasons. Park one at the Cataraqui Centre and somebody asks you about it before you reach the doors.

Then there is the part that converts people permanently: you stop going to gas stations.

Plugging in at home takes about as long as carrying the groceries in, and the car is full every morning, at the same time as your phone.

What Happens to the Battery Warranty When an IONIQ 5 Changes Hands?

Hyundai Canada lists an 8-year/160,000-km EV System Warranty that includes the high-voltage battery.

Before purchase, confirm the remaining coverage, in-service date, exclusions and transfer terms for the specific VIN with Hyundai Canada.

Coverage on the battery and the electric parts belongs to the vehicle rather than to the person who bought it new, and it runs on the manufacturer's terms from the day that vehicle first went into service.

So two things decide what is left on the car in front of you: its in-service date, and the manufacturer's coverage terms for that model year. Neither of those lives in a blog post.

Ask the seller for three things in writing: the original in-service date, the owner's warranty documentation that came with the car, and any record of work already done under coverage.

Here is the part most dealer blogs will not tell you. We are not a Hyundai store, so we cannot look a Hyundai up in Hyundai's own system, and we are not going to imply we can.

What we will do is sit down with that paperwork beside you before money changes hands, which is more use than a number pulled off a website.

What a state-of-health reading is, and why to ask for one

A state-of-health reading is a measurement of how much capacity the battery has left compared with when it was new, taken from the vehicle itself.

Ask whether one has been taken, who took it and on what date, because a reading from two years ago describes a different car than the one you are buying.

What Does a Kingston Winter Do to a Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Where Do You Charge It?

Cold weather takes range out of every electric car, and Kingston gives that a proper test between December and March.

How far does a used IONIQ 5 go? It depends which one

There is no single IONIQ 5 range figure, and that is the first thing to know before you compare two listings.

The Government of Canada Fuel Consumption Ratings, published by Natural Resources Canada, rate the 2022 IONIQ 5 Standard Range at 354 kilometers and the 2025 IONIQ 5 Long Range at 504 kilometers. Same nameplate, 150 kilometers apart.

Model year and version

Rated range, federal ratings

2022 Standard Range

354 km

2022 Long Range

488 km

2022 Long Range AWD

414 km

2023 Standard Range

354 km

2023 Long Range

488 km

2023 Long Range AWD

422 km

2024 Long Range

488 km

2024 Long Range AWD

410 km

2025 Standard Range

373 km

2025 Long Range

504 km

2025 Long Range AWD, 19-inch wheels

463 km

2025 Long Range AWD, 20-inch wheels

425 km

2025 Long Range AWD XRT

417 km

2025 IONIQ 5 N

356 km

Two of those rows are worth the whole table. The 2025 Long Range AWD is rated at 463 kilometers on 19-inch wheels and 425 on 20-inch wheels, so the same car in the same year sits 38 kilometers apart on wheels alone, and nothing in a listing photo tells you which one you are looking at.

Newer is not automatically longer, either. The federal ratings put the Long Range AWD at 414 kilometers for 2022, 422 for 2023 and 410 for 2024, before the 2025 figures above.

The 2026 rows in the same file repeat the 2025 figures, and that 2026 block carries no Standard Range row at all — which is a fact about what the federal file lists, and not a statement about what is available, discontinued or arriving anywhere.

The 2025 IONIQ 5 N sits in that same data at 478 kW, so nothing written about a Long Range describes it.

Why the winter number is lower than the rated one

Every figure in that table was measured under the federal test conditions, and a test condition is not a promise about a February morning on Highway 401.

The battery is cold, the heater and the defrost are running and the tires are fighting a cold road, and all of it comes out of the same battery that moves the car.

So plan around a winter number, and read the rated one as the best case rather than the everyday one.

What that means for an ordinary Kingston week

Almost nothing. A run downtown, a school loop, a shift at the hospital or the base and a trip for groceries does not come close to emptying one of these, even in the cold.

The drive that needs a plan is the long cold one, out to Belleville and back or over to Brockville and on, and pre-conditioning is the habit that fixes most of it: warm the battery and the cabin while the car is still plugged in, so the heat comes out of the wall instead of out of your range.

Where you actually charge one around Kingston

At home, overnight, on a circuit installed for the job.

For home charging, plan for a properly installed 240-volt Level 2 circuit and charging equipment sized for the vehicle and your electrical panel. Have a licensed electrician assess the installation; do not assume an existing dryer or stove outlet is suitable.

The Government of Canada Fuel Consumption Ratings list a recharge time of 5.8 to 8.9 hours across the 2022 to 2026 IONIQ 5 versions, so how long that overnight takes is a version question as well, and charging slows down further in the cold.

That is the federal file's recharge-time figure and it is the only charging time this guide states: no fast-charging time appears anywhere here, because no manufacturer source could be read at source today.

Public charging along the Highway 401 corridor is the backup rather than the plan. It is fine on an occasional trip. As a daily routine it depends on whether you can plan the day around charging time rather than the other way round.

Your house has a say in it too, so get a licensed electrician to tell you what your panel can support before you buy the car rather than after.

If you rent, park on the street downtown or share a lot with no outlet, be honest with yourself now. An electric car you can only charge somewhere else is one you will resent by the second week of January.

Tires, because this is a heavy car that moves quickly

An electric crossover is heavier than a gas one of the same size and puts its power down the instant you ask for it, which is lovely in October and a handful in January.

Winter tires matter more on a car like this, not less. All-wheel drive helps you go, and winter tires are what help you stop.

Book a service appointment online for the winter set before the first storm rather than the week after it, which is when every bay in this city is full.

What Should You Confirm on a Used IONIQ 5 Before You Sign?

Confirm six things, and notice that every one of them has a document or a person behind it rather than an opinion — which matters more than usual on a make nobody in this building sells new.

What changes from one car to the next

Why it changes your ownership

Where the answer is written, and who owns that record

Which version it is, and which wheels are on it

How far it goes, how long a charge takes, and whether it drives one axle or both

The original window sticker and the vehicle's build paperwork, pinned to that model year. The advertisement is not proof

The battery's state of health

What the range is now rather than when new

A reading taken from the vehicle. Ask who took it and when. We cannot pull Hyundai's own data and will not pretend otherwise

What factory coverage is left

Who pays if something expensive fails

The owner's warranty documentation and the in-service date, confirmed with the seller in writing

Whether a recall is outstanding

Work that should be done before you own the problem

Transport Canada's public recall database, free and covering every make. Bring us the VIN and we will search it with you at the counter

The charge cord, and what is on your own wall

Whether you can charge it on day one

The car itself for the cord, and a licensed electrician for the house

The tires on it today

Stopping on the worst morning of the year

The vehicle in front of you. Bring it to our service department and we will measure the tread and tell you straight

Then have the car itself looked at, which is the step nobody regrets paying for.

Book a pre-purchase inspection with our service department before money changes hands, on any used vehicle, whoever is selling it.

Who Should Not Buy a Used IONIQ 5, and What to Look At Instead

Three buyers should not buy one, and saying so costs us nothing.

If you have nowhere to plug in where you park overnight, this is the wrong car whatever the price looks like.

If you tow regularly, a trailer takes a hard bite out of any electric car's range, and there are better tools for that job in our used inventory.

And if your life involves long, unfamiliar winter drives at short notice, the planning that comes with a battery will wear on you before the first year is out.

If you liked the idea of plugging in but one of those three is you, read about the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe next, a plug-in hybrid version of a vehicle we do sell and service here, covered in our new Grand Cherokee buyer's guide.

If you would rather stay with gasoline entirely, start with our used compact crossover comparison and then our used SUV listings, and if you want the same make with an engine still in it, our used Hyundai Tucson Hybrid guide covers that nameplate properly.

Trading In and Financing a Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Kingston (O.A.C.)

Yes to both, and they go faster together than apart.

Your trade

See what your current vehicle is worth online first, so you arrive with a number instead of a feeling.

We appraise it in person, whatever badge is on it, and put the value in writing against its condition, kilometers, history and what the same vehicle is doing in Eastern Ontario right now.

Bring the ownership, every key you have and the service records, plus your lender's details if there is still a loan on it.

With your permission we request the payout from your lender and show it beside the appraisal on one page, so nothing is hiding.

We also buy vehicles outright, so a spare car can be sold to us even if you are not buying anything today.

Financing, O.A.C.

Financing is available on pre-owned vehicles at Jim Thompson Chrysler through our online credit application, O.A.C.

Approval depends on your application, income, credit, the vehicle and the lender's requirements, so nobody here promises an outcome before seeing the file.

Pre-approval is available, O.A.C., it is not binding, and it commits you to nothing at all.

Why Shop for a Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Kingston at Jim Thompson Chrysler

Because you will get a straight answer about a car we have no reason to oversell, from people who will still be here when you need your tires changed.

We are a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram store, and a used IONIQ 5 is not a vehicle we sell new, so nobody here is protecting a sales target by talking you into one.

What that looks like in practice:

  • We will tell you not to buy an electric car if you have nowhere to charge it, because that is the answer that still looks right in February.

  • We put a used vehicle on our own hoist and tell you what we find, on any make.

  • We search Transport Canada's public recall database with you using the VIN, because it is free, public and covers every make on the road.

  • We appraise your trade in person, whatever make it is and whether or not it is paid off.

  • Send a credit application online so the finance side is moving before you visit, O.A.C.

Our pre-owned listings change across the group as vehicles come and go, so our used inventory page is the only honest picture of what is listed right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 the same car as the Hyundai Ioniq?

No. The IONIQ 5 is a tall, square, battery-only crossover, and the Ioniq was a smaller hatchback sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions.

Search results mix the two constantly, so confirm the model on the vehicle's own paperwork rather than on the advertisement.

Can you own a Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Kingston without a driveway?

It is difficult, and we will say so plainly. Reliable overnight charging at home on a properly installed 240-volt Level 2 circuit is what makes ownership straightforward here, and public charging along the Highway 401 corridor suits occasional trips rather than daily use.

Does the battery warranty transfer to a second owner?

Coverage belongs to the vehicle and runs on the manufacturer's terms from the day it first went into service, so the answer for one specific car is in that car's own warranty documentation and its in-service date.

Get both in writing. Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston will read that paperwork with you.

How far does a used Hyundai IONIQ 5 go on one charge?

It depends entirely on which one. The Government of Canada Fuel Consumption Ratings rate the 2022 IONIQ 5 Standard Range at 354 kilometers and the 2025 IONIQ 5 Long Range at 504 kilometers, and the 2025 Long Range AWD at 463 on 19-inch wheels against 425 on 20-inch wheels.

Those are test figures rather than February figures, so plan a Kingston winter around less than the rated number.

Can I trade in my car and finance a used Hyundai IONIQ 5 at Jim Thompson Chrysler?

Yes. See what your vehicle is worth online, then Jim Thompson Chrysler on Gardiners Road in Kingston appraises it in person and puts the value in writing, any make, paid off or not.

Financing is available on pre-owned vehicles through our credit application, O.A.C., and pre-approval is not binding.
