Jeep Compass Kingston: Which One Should You Buy, New or Nearly New?

If you want a compact Jeep and you are stuck on which one, here is the short version.

A Jeep Compass Kingston search can land you on a listing for a model year you did not ask about, so every fact on this page is pinned to a model year and a version.

Sport, North, Altitude and the 85th Anniversary share one engine and one four-wheel-drive system, so choose between them on the equipment you will actually use, and look at the Trailhawk only if your weekends genuinely leave the pavement. Whether a two- or three-year-old one is the better buy is a fair question too, and this guide asks it.

At Jim Thompson Chrysler on Gardiners Road, Jeep is one of the four makes we sell new and service in the same building.

This guide walks the versions, names Jeep's own four-wheel-drive systems, says what each one does on a Kingston winter street, and covers trade-ins and financing, O.A.C.

Key Takeaways

  • Every 2026 Jeep Compass in the Canadian fuel ratings is a four-wheel-drive Compass. The Government of Canada's 2026 Fuel Consumption Ratings, read on September 30, 2026, list the Compass 4X4 with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder and the eight-speed automatic at 10.0 city, 7.5 highway and 8.9 L/100 km combined, and carry no front-wheel-drive Compass entry at all - so traction is not the thing you are choosing here, and Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston would rather you spent the decision on the version instead.

  • The four-wheel-drive system is where the versions actually differ, and Jeep names its own. Jeep Canada's Compass pages, read September 30, 2026, list All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System as standard on Sport, North, Altitude and the 85th Anniversary, and on the Trailhawk they list All-Wheel Drive (AWD) plus the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System with Selec-Terrain Traction Management System With Rock Mode.

  • Four-wheel drive gets you moving; winter tires are what stop you. On a Kingston side street after a plough has been through, those are two different jobs, and no Compass does the second one on its own.

  • A two- or three-year-old Compass is a real answer to the new-or-nearly-new question, and we will put it to you even though it can cost us the new-vehicle sale. Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston will price the new one and the nearly-new one side by side and let you pick.

  • Do not plan on a plug-in Compass in Canada. The Government of Canada's plug-in hybrid file, read September 30, 2026, lists no Jeep Compass entry in any model year from 2012 to 2026.

Why Do Jeep Compass Kingston Shoppers Want One in the First Place?

Because it is a Jeep that fits in a downtown parking spot, and both halves of that sentence matter.

A Jeep Compass Kingston shopper can test one against their own week, and none of what decides it is on a specification sheet.

Park one off Princess Street on a Saturday and it goes into the kind of space you would not attempt in anything bigger. You stop circling the block, which is most of what a compact vehicle is actually for.

A silver Jeep Compass parked tight in a short curbside space on a limestone street in downtown Kingston, a young man walking away along the sidewalk and glancing back at it

Then you walk away from it and glance back, and there is the seven-slot grille sitting in a limestone streetscape looking like the thing it is. Nobody mistakes it for a rental.

The test that matters is the first real snowfall, and that is the morning four driven wheels are for. Pair them with proper winter tires and you have done what can be done about the end of the driveway.

That morning is worth more in January than any feature on a window sticker.

The other half is the Saturday you did not plan. A gravel concession road out past Inverary, a boat launch, a trailhead that has not seen a grader since spring - you point it up there and come home with the underside dirty.

A Compass also fits an ordinary Kingston life rather than an aspirational one. School run down Bath Road, the 401 to Ottawa and back, a Home Depot load that goes in the back with the rear seats folded.

The honest flip side, so you have it in week one instead of week two: this is a compact vehicle, and compact means compact. Four adults and their luggage is a real conversation, and it is one we will have with you at the desk rather than let you discover on the way to the airport.

Which 2026 Jeep Compass Versions Are There?

Five, and Jeep Canada writes them as Sport, North, Altitude, Trailhawk and 85th Anniversary on its Compass pages, read September 30, 2026.

The useful thing about that list is what does not change across it. Jeep Canada lists every one of the five with the same 2.0L Turbo engine and the eight-speed automatic.

Version, as Jeep Canada writes it

Powertrain, as Jeep Canada names it

Four-wheel-drive system, as Jeep Canada names it

Standard or available

Sport

2.0L Turbo with 8-Speed Automatic

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System

Standard

North

2.0L Turbo with 8-Speed Automatic

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System

Standard

Altitude

2.0L Turbo with 8-Speed Automatic

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System

Standard

Trailhawk

2.0L Turbo with 8-Speed Automatic

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) plus Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System, with Selec-Terrain Traction Management System With Rock Mode

Standard

85th Anniversary

2.0L Turbo with 8-Speed Automatic

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System

Standard

Those five names, the powertrain names and the system names are Jeep Canada's own, from its Compass pages read on September 30, 2026. The package behind any of these names changes by model year, which is why the specific vehicle's window sticker is the authority and not this table.

The Jeep Compass fuel ratings on this page are the Government of Canada's published figures, which Natural Resources Canada's 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide, read October 1, 2026, says manufacturers generate using standard, controlled laboratory testing.

Federal entry

Model year

Engine and transmission

City / highway / combined, L/100 km

Compass 4X4

2026

2.0 L, four cylinders, A8 automatic

10.0 / 7.5 / 8.9

Compass 4X4

2025

2.0 L, four cylinders, A8 automatic

9.9 / 7.4 / 8.8

Both rows are from the Government of Canada's Fuel Consumption Ratings, read on September 30, 2026, where "A8" means an automatic with eight gears and the Compass is classed as a small sport utility vehicle.

The gap between the two model years is 0.1 L/100 km combined, which is nothing you will ever feel at a pump. Choose on the vehicle and the paperwork, not on that.

What is not in this guide, and why

No towing rating, no horsepower, no torque, no ground clearance, no cargo volume. Those are numbers to read off the window sticker of the specific vehicle you are buying.

So the guide does not state them at all rather than quote them from memory and be wrong in front of you. Build the version you want in Build and Price, bring it in, and we will read the sticker with you line by line.

Which Jeep Compass Kingston Version Should You Buy?

Work up from what your week actually asks of the vehicle, not down from the top of the range.

Sport

Sport is the whole idea with nothing extra bolted on: the shape, the grille, the same engine and the same standard four-wheel drive as the rest of the range.

If what you want is a compact Jeep that handles a Kingston winter, this is the row you are in and there is no shame in stopping here.

North

North is the version we would put our own money on for a Kingston commute, on the same engine and four-wheel-drive system as Sport.

Bring us the window sticker and we will go through what it adds, line by line, against how your week actually runs.

Altitude

Altitude carries the same engine and the same standard four-wheel-drive system as Sport and North, per Jeep Canada's Compass pages read September 30, 2026.

Altitude does not change what the vehicle does, so choose it on the equipment the window sticker lists, not because someone suggested it is the capable one.

Trailhawk

Trailhawk is the one version with a genuinely different four-wheel-drive setup, and Jeep names it: All-Wheel Drive (AWD) plus the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System, with Selec-Terrain Traction Management System With Rock Mode, standard on that version per Jeep Canada's Compass pages read September 30, 2026.

That extra capability earns its money if your weekends leave the pavement properly. For a gravel cottage lane north of Sydenham and a boat launch in May, every other version in the table is already more vehicle than the road is asking for.

A silver Jeep Compass with its tailgate raised on the gravel at a boat launch north of Kingston, a woman and a man carrying a green canoe up from the water's edge, a blue cooler and two paddles on the gravel in front of them

85th Anniversary

The anniversary version is a package on the same mechanical vehicle, with the same standard system as Sport, North and Altitude.

Treat it the way you would treat Altitude: the same mechanical vehicle, decided on the equipment you want.

Where the money stops buying anything that matters here

Across the five versions the engine and the transmission do not change, and four of the five share the same four-wheel-drive system. The real fork in the road is Trailhawk or not.

So the honest advice is to choose the equipment you will use and then stop. We will tell you where we think you should stop, and then you decide.

New or Nearly New: Should You Buy a Used Jeep Compass Instead?

Sometimes, and we would rather put the question to you than leave it out.

A two- or three-year-old Compass does the same job, and the money you do not spend is money that stays in your household.

The federal ratings show how little the model year moves the fuel figure: the 2025 Compass 4X4 is rated 9.9 city, 7.4 highway and 8.8 combined and the 2026 at 10.0, 7.5 and 8.9, per the Government of Canada's Fuel Consumption Ratings read September 30, 2026. For an older one, its own fuel-consumption label is the figure to check.

What does differ is the paperwork. A new one comes with the manufacturer's new-vehicle warranty and no history to check; a used one needs its service records read and its VIN checked, and if it comes from a private seller, our guide to the used vehicle information package covers that paperwork too.

What we do on a used one, and what you should ask for

Bring us the vehicle or the VIN and our Jeep service team can inspect it and check its VIN against the manufacturer's own system for open recalls, because Jeep is a make we franchise.

We will also book an inspection and go through the tires, the brakes and the service history with you before anything is signed.

Where to look for one

Our pre-owned listings and our used SUV listings are the honest answer to what is available, and what is listed there changes from week to week.

If a nearly-new compact from another make is also on your list, our used Mazda CX-30 guide walks the same decision on a different vehicle. That is a page, not a recommendation to switch.

What Does Jeep's Four-Wheel Drive Do on a Kingston Winter Street?

Jeep's four-wheel drive gets you moving, and on an unploughed side street in the west end that is worth real money.

Four driven wheels are what pull you out of the snowbank at the end of the driveway and up the hill off Sydenham Road. That is the job the system is for.

Stopping is a different job entirely. Four-wheel drive does nothing about stopping on packed snow at the bottom of a hill, and confusing the two is how a capable vehicle ends up facing the wrong way on the 401.

Stopping is a tire job, which is why the tire paragraph below matters more than any badge on the tailgate.

A technician kneeling at the front wheel of a silver Jeep Compass in a service bay, lifting a winter tire on its own steel rim into place with a second mounted winter tire on the floor beside her

What the Selec-Terrain system is actually for

Selec-Terrain Traction Management System is Jeep's name for the dial that changes how the vehicle divides its traction, and it is standard across the versions in the table above per Jeep Canada's Compass pages read September 30, 2026.

In practice you leave it alone most of the week and you reach for it on the two mornings a year when the end of your street has not been touched, and on the gravel road where the surface keeps changing.

What the Trailhawk's system adds, and who needs it

The Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System with Rock Mode is the Trailhawk's standard setup on those same pages, and it is built for the slow, low-traction work an ordinary road never asks for.

If your hardest surface is a Frontenac Park access road in late October, you do not need it. If you genuinely crawl over rock and ruts, you will know already, and that is the version to look at.

What is worth sorting out here that a buyer in Vancouver would skip

Winter tires on their own rims, ordered in October rather than during the first storm, because the calls all land on our own parts counter in the same week every year.

We order those through our own parts department on Gardiners Road and you can book the swap at the same time.

And send your VIN to our service department while you are at it - Jeep is a make we franchise, so we check it against the manufacturer's own system for open recalls and book any open work while we have you.

Who Should Not Buy a Jeep Compass?

Five buyers, and we would rather tell you now than have you discover it in month three. If what you actually need is a bed, our Jeep Gladiator guide covers the Jeep with one.

If you need a third row, this shape does not have one and liking it will not add one. Our Jeep Grand Cherokee guide is written for the buyer who needs more room.

If you tow anything serious, start the conversation with the trailer rather than the vehicle, and come and talk to us before you choose. This guide states no towing figure, because the number that matters is the one on the specific vehicle's paperwork.

If you want the quietest possible highway commuter, a compact SUV on all-season tires is not it, and no version in the table changes that. Our Jeep Cherokee guide covers the size up.

And if you were hoping for a plug-in Compass, the Government of Canada's plug-in hybrid file read September 30, 2026 lists no Jeep Compass entry in any model year from 2012 to 2026, so plan on the gasoline version here.

Trading In and Financing a Jeep Compass Kingston Purchase, O.A.C.

Yes, you can trade in what you are driving now, whether it is paid off or you still owe money on it, and whatever make it is.

See what your current vehicle is worth online first, so you arrive with a starting point instead of a guess.

Bring the ownership, both keys, your service records and your lender's details, and we appraise it in person and put the value in writing, based on its condition, kilometers, history and what the same vehicle is doing in Eastern Ontario right now.

With your permission we request the lender payout and put the appraisal, the payout and the finance options on one page, in plain language.

We also buy vehicles outright, so a second vehicle in the driveway can be sold even if you are not buying from us today.

Financing a Compass, new or used, O.A.C.

Financing is available on a new or used Compass, O.A.C., and you can start a credit application online, O.A.C., before you have settled on a version.

Approval depends on your application, income, credit, the vehicle and lender requirements, so nobody here promises an outcome before the file has been read.

If the new-against-nearly-new question is really a question about how to pay for it, our guide to leasing against financing in Kingston walks the ownership, kilometer-limit and early-exit parts in plain language.

Why Shop for a Jeep Compass at Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston?

Because we sell this vehicle new and service it in the same building at 805 Gardiners Road, so we can read the window sticker and the build sheet with you and tell you which four-wheel-drive system is on the specific vehicle rather than which one is on the brochure.

Our Jeep service team can inspect the vehicle and check its VIN against the manufacturer's own system for open recalls, on a new one or a used one, and that is something we can do rather than something we can claim.

Jim Thompson Chrysler carries new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, and our live inventory shows what is currently available.

A young man in a grey sweater with one hand on the door frame of a silver Jeep Compass with its front door open, while a woman in a navy zip top gestures towards the vehicle, on a paved Kingston lot with a plain brick wall, a clipped hedge and autumn maples behind them in low evening sun

What we do:

There is one more reason this page exists. We would rather write down the version answer and the new-against-nearly-new arithmetic, and lose the new-vehicle sale to a nearly-new one that suits you better, than leave a Jeep Compass Kingston shopper to piece it together one listing at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 2026 Jeep Compass versions?

Jeep Canada's Compass pages, read September 30, 2026, list five: Sport, North, Altitude, Trailhawk and 85th Anniversary.

All five carry the 2.0L Turbo engine with the eight-speed automatic on those pages, so the choice is about equipment and, on the Trailhawk, about the four-wheel-drive system.

Is the Jeep Compass all-wheel drive in Canada?

Yes, on every entry the federal ratings list. The Government of Canada's 2026 Fuel Consumption Ratings, read September 30, 2026, list the Compass 4X4 and carry no front-wheel-drive Compass entry.

Jeep Canada's Compass pages read the same day list All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Plus Selec-Terrain Traction Management System as standard on Sport, North, Altitude and the 85th Anniversary.

How much fuel does a Jeep Compass use?

The Government of Canada's 2026 Fuel Consumption Ratings, read September 30, 2026, rate the 2026 Compass 4X4 with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic at 10.0 city, 7.5 highway and 8.9 L/100 km combined.

The same source rates the 2025 Compass 4X4 at 9.9, 7.4 and 8.8, a difference of 0.1 combined.

Is the Jeep Compass Trailhawk worth it?

Only if your weekends properly leave the pavement. Jeep Canada's pages, read September 30, 2026, give the Trailhawk the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System with Rock Mode as standard, which the other versions do not have.

For a Kingston-area gravel lane or boat launch, Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston would tell you the other versions are already enough vehicle.

Should I buy a new or used Jeep Compass in Kingston?

Either can be right, and the fuel figures do not decide it: the federal ratings put the 2025 and 2026 Compass 4X4 within 0.1 L/100 km combined of each other.

Bring both options to Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston, and we will put new and nearly-new side by side, with the trade-in and financing on the same page, O.A.C.
