Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity in Kingston: Which Version Fits Your Trailer?

A green Jeep Gladiator four-door pickup on machined alloy wheels, hitched to a small white folded-down tent trailer, parked at the curb in front of a terrace of grey limestone row houses with autumn maples in Kingston, under a headline in white capitals reading "Which version fits your trailer?"

Jeep Gladiator towing capacity changes from version to version: Jeep Canada's 2026 Gladiator models page, read October 7, 2026, lists figures from 2,041 kg to 3,175 kg across its eight version cards. The right Gladiator for your trailer is the version whose figure, and then the specific truck's own rating, covers what the trailer weighs with everything loaded in it.

If your trailer weighs more loaded than the 2,041 kg on Jeep Canada's 2026 Sport S, Nighthawk and 85th Anniversary Edition cards, start with the 2,722 kg on the Willys, Mojave and Mojave X cards or the 3,175 kg on the Rubicon and Rubicon X cards. If your loaded trailer is heavier than every 2026 Gladiator card figure, bring us its weight before you go further, and we will go through the specific truck's build sheet with you.

At Jim Thompson Chrysler on Gardiners Road, we would rather match the truck to your trailer before you buy it than after.

This guide covers what each version card lists, how to set your trailer's weight against it, what the Government of Ontario asks of a trailer from brakes to plates, and how trading in and applying for financing, O.A.C., fit around the choice.

Key Takeaways

  • Jeep Gladiator towing capacity differs by version. Jeep Canada's 2026 Gladiator models page, read October 7, 2026, lists 2,041 kg on the Sport S, Nighthawk and 85th Anniversary Edition cards, 2,722 kg on the Willys, Mojave and Mojave X cards and 3,175 kg on the Rubicon and Rubicon X cards.

  • Weigh the trailer loaded, then look at the truck. Compare what your trailer weighs with its load against the towing rating of the specific Gladiator you are looking at, and bring both numbers to us.

  • Ontario sets a trailer-brake line, and a Gladiator buyer checks it first. The towing chapter of the Government of Ontario's Official Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver's Handbook, updated February 1, 2023 and read October 7, 2026, says a trailer with "a gross trailer weight, vehicle and load of 1,360 kilograms or more" must have "brakes strong enough to stop and hold the trailer," so Jim Thompson Chrysler in Kingston's advice is to weigh your trailer loaded and settle its brakes before you choose a version.

  • In Ontario, a trailer is registered as its own vehicle. The Government of Ontario's towing chapter says "a trailer is considered a separate vehicle" that you "must register" at a ServiceOntario centre before you tow it on any public road, and registering it brings "a licence plate and vehicle permit."

  • The trade and the credit application can start before the truck is chosen. You can enter your vehicle on Value My Trade and apply for financing online, O.A.C., whichever Gladiator you settle on.

Why Does Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity Matter on a Kingston Weekend?

Jeep Gladiator towing capacity matters on a Kingston weekend because, once the version you buy is matched to the trailer you own, hitching up becomes part of an ordinary week rather than a project.

Picture a Saturday in early October on Loughborough Lake, the small fishing boat already backed down the launch and the coffee still too hot to drink. The rods, the cooler and the life jackets rode out in the bed, so the back seat is free for whoever wanted to come along.

A man holding a steaming mug stands on the granite shore of a misty lake beside a small aluminum boat with oars on its trailer at the water's edge, hitched to a green Jeep Gladiator pickup on a concrete launch ramp with fishing rods and a white cooler in its box

Or the Thanksgiving long weekend, with the tent trailer rolled out of a side yard in Collins Bay after work on Friday and pointed north toward a campsite near Sharbot Lake.

On a Wednesday evening, a utility trailer of leaves and brush from the fall cleanup goes to the yard-waste drop-off, and the truck is back in the driveway before the streetlights come on.

Then comes January, when the snowmobile trailer leaves a driveway in Sydenham before sunrise for the trails north of town.

The honest other side belongs here as well. A trailer adds length behind any truck, so practise backing it into your own driveway on a quiet weekday before a long weekend depends on it.

What Is the Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity of Each 2026 Version?

Jeep Canada's 2026 Gladiator models page, read October 7, 2026, prints three towing figures across its eight version cards: 2,041 kg for the Sport S, Nighthawk and 85th Anniversary Edition, 2,722 kg for the Willys, Mojave and Mojave X, and 3,175 kg for the Rubicon and Rubicon X.

Each figure in the table is the one shown on that version's card on Jeep Canada's 2026 Gladiator models page, read October 7, 2026. Whether a specific truck matches its card is confirmed with our team against that truck's build sheet.

A card figure is where the choice starts, and the specific truck is where it ends.

Reading a Card Figure Against a Real Truck

The build sheet of the truck you are looking at says what that truck is equipped with, and we will read it with you before you plan a trailer around a card figure.

If you have read about a towing package for the Gladiator, the specific truck's build sheet is also where to see whether it carries one.

You can start on our Build and Price page, then bring us the version you are leaning toward.

Choosing Between the Versions

Towing is one reason to choose a version, and our Jeep Gladiator guide walks through the rest of the choice, from the 4x4 systems to the bed.

How Do You Match Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity to the Trailer You Own?

Match Jeep Gladiator towing capacity to your trailer by comparing two numbers: what the trailer weighs with its load, and the towing rating of the specific Gladiator you are looking at.

What Your Trailer Weighs Loaded

The Government of Ontario's towing chapter describes a trailer's gross weight as "the total weight of the trailer and its load," and that loaded weight is the number to compare.

Find the empty weight from the trailer's maker, or from a label on the trailer if it carries one, then add what goes on or in it: the boat and motor, the camping gear, the snowmobile or the load of brush.

A woman in a burgundy hooded sweatshirt lifts an armful of cut branches into a black open utility trailer half full of leaves and brush, hitched behind a green Jeep Gladiator pickup in the driveway of a brick house, with a rake leaning on a pile of autumn leaves

The Specific Truck's Rating

The specific truck's rating means the towing figure Jeep Canada lists for that truck's version, checked against the equipment on its build sheet.

Bring us the trailer's loaded weight and we can set the two numbers side by side before you choose a version.

Hitch Weight and Payload

About five to 10 per cent of the trailer's total weight should be supported on the hitch, within the weight limit marked on the hitch, according to the Government of Ontario's towing chapter.

Jeep Canada's 2026 Gladiator models page lists payload of 465 kg on the Sport S, Willys, Nighthawk and 85th Anniversary Edition cards, 476 kg on the Mojave and Mojave X cards and 499 kg on the Rubicon and Rubicon X cards. Ask us to go through the specific truck's payload with the trailer's hitch weight and what rides in the cab and bed.

Who Should Look Past a Jeep Gladiator for Towing?

Two buyers should look past a Gladiator: the one whose trailer is a large travel trailer or a fifth-wheel, and the one who wants a full-size truck for hauling every day.

For a large travel trailer or a fifth-wheel, a heavy-duty truck is the conversation to have, and our Ram 2500 guide is written for that buyer.

For full-size hauling every day, start with our Ram 1500 guide instead.

Does My Trailer Need Its Own Brakes in Ontario?

A trailer with "a gross trailer weight, vehicle and load of 1,360 kilograms or more" must have "brakes strong enough to stop and hold the trailer," according to the towing chapter of the Government of Ontario's Official Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver's Handbook, read October 7, 2026.

Weigh your trailer loaded against the province's brake line before you shop, and plan its brakes alongside the version rather than after it.

Its Own Plate and Permit

"A trailer is considered a separate vehicle," says the Government of Ontario's towing chapter, and "before you can tow one on any public road, you must register it and pay a one-time registration fee at a ServiceOntario centre."

When you register your trailer, the Government of Ontario's towing chapter says you "will receive a licence plate and vehicle permit," and it asks you to attach the plate to the back of the trailer "where it is clearly visible."

"Always carry your permit, or a copy of it, to show to a police officer when asked," in the words of the Government of Ontario's towing chapter.

Two Ways to Stay Attached

Your trailer "must have two separate ways of attaching to your vehicle so that if one fails or comes loose, the trailer will stay attached," in the words of the Government of Ontario's towing chapter.

If safety chains are used, the Government of Ontario's towing chapter says "they must be crossed under the tongue to prevent the tongue from dropping to the road if the primary hitch accidentally disconnects," and the chain hooks need "latches or devices that will not accidentally become detached."

Two safety chains cross in an X under the black A-frame tongue of a utility trailer whose coupler sits on the hitch at the back of a truck, as a hand holds the hook at the end of one chain, with fallen maple leaves on the driveway

Ask our service team whether they can look over your hitch and trailer wiring before the first trip, and book a service appointment online once you know what the truck needs.

Lights on the Trailer

Under the Government of Ontario's towing chapter, your trailer must have "a white licence plate light," "a red tail light" and "two red reflectors at the rear of the trailer, as far apart as possible."

If your trailer is wider than 2.05 metres, the Government of Ontario's towing chapter says it must also have "two yellow clearance lights, one on each side at the front of the trailer, as far apart as possible" and "two red clearance lights, or reflectors, one on each side at the rear of the trailer, as far apart as possible."

Mirrors When the Load Blocks Your View

"If the load in your trailer blocks your vision to the rear, you must have additional mirrors that provide a clear view of the road to the rear," according to the Government of Ontario's towing chapter.

No Passengers in the Trailer

"You may not carry any person in any trailer, including a house or boat trailer, when it is being towed," the Government of Ontario's towing chapter says.

What Ontario Says About a G Licence and a Trailer

The Government of Ontario's towing chapter says you "must have a valid driver's licence (Class G1, G2 or G) or higher class of licence to tow a trailer with a gross vehicle weight of up to 4,600 kilograms."

Where a trailer and its load exceed the size and weight specified in the Highway Traffic Act, the Government of Ontario's towing chapter says you may need "a higher class of licence or an oversize vehicle permit," and it adds that "it is against the law to tow more than one trailer behind non-commercial vehicles."

Set your own trailer against the rules above before its first trip, and bring any question about the truck side of the hitch to us.

Financing a Jeep Gladiator and Trading In, O.A.C.

You can apply for financing online, O.A.C., and start your trade on Value My Trade, before you have settled on a version or a trailer plan.

The Vehicle You Drive Now

Enter your current vehicle on Value My Trade before you visit, and bring the ownership, the keys and your service records when you come in.

If you would rather sell than trade, start on our We Buy Cars page.

If You Owe More Than It Is Worth

If you owe more on your current vehicle than it is worth, the difference may be added to the amount financed, which increases the amount you borrow and can increase the total cost of borrowing.

Bring your lender's details, so the numbers can be worked through with your own paperwork in front of you.

Applying for Financing, O.A.C.

Financing and leasing options may be available on a new Jeep Gladiator, O.A.C., and you can start a credit application online before you visit.

Approval depends on your application, income, credit, the vehicle and lender requirements, so no outcome is promised before the application has been reviewed.

Lease or Finance

If the truck will tow often and pile on kilometers, settle leasing against financing early, and read our lease or finance guide before you choose.
